The policies of the Niagara University Library

Patron Code of Conduct

The Niagara University Library welcomes a diverse population of faculty, students, staff, alumni, and community patrons within the library. Patrons are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that respects others using our space, the space itself, and the materials found within the space. 

 

The following conduct is prohibited. Failure to cooperate with reasonable requests of library staff related to the policies or use of the library may lead to persons being removed from the library or banned from future library usage.

General rules of conduct

  • All Library users must be fully clothed, including the wearing of shoes, within the building for the purposes of safety and hygiene.
    • Patrons with issues regarding body odor or personal hygiene may be asked to leave the Library
  • Patrons must clean up any messes or trash they create when leaving the Library including erasing whiteboards after use.
  • Library spaces, materials, equipment, furniture, study rooms, and rest rooms may not be damaged, defaced, or misused.
    • Reserved study rooms must be within their occupancy limits 
    • Patrons may not enter unauthorized or staff only areas
  • Only service animals, emotional support animals, or animals at an event approved by Library administration are allowed within the building.
  • Children under the age of 14 are not permitted in the Library without a supervising adult
  • No smoking or vaping of nicotine products within the Library or in Library stairways outdoors
  • Being under the influence of alcohol and/or legal or illegal drugs
    • Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages in the Library or in Library stairways outdoors
    • Smoking, vaping, or consumption of legal or illegal drugs within the Library or in Library stairways outdoors
  • Use of computers and electronic resources must be in accordance with Niagara University’s policies
  • Excessive noise including yelling, playing of music or videos without headphones, and disturbing cell phone use is prohibited

  • Solicitation, petitioning, posting or distributing materials without permission is prohibited
    • Students and organizations wishing to post flyers need to have them stamped by Campus Activities

 

Violations of legal and/or Niagara University policies:

All Library users must follow local, state, and federal laws. Patrons may not Commit or attempt to commit acts that violate these laws or the policies of Niagara University. Violations of laws may lead to notification of Campus Security and/or law enforcement.

  • Carrying, use, or threatened use of weapons in the Library
  • Damaging or defacing Library materials, furniture, or equipment
  • Attempting to steal, or remove without borrowing, Library materials, furniture, decor (posters, pictures, plants) or equipment
  • Engaging in sexual conduct (consensual or non-consensual), sexual assault (including non-consensual touching), sexual harassment, or viewing of pornography on Library or personal devices within the Library
  • Harassment, abuse, or threats against Library staff and/or patrons using the Library 
    • Verbal (in person or phone), electronic (email, chat, text), or written (notes, whiteboards)
  • Failing to adhere to US copyright laws
