Plagiarism Guide for Faculty

Individualized Help

Have questions? NU Librarian Melissa Langridge is available to help faculty regarding plagiarism issues. See her contact info below. Assistance can include:

  • A presentation/lesson for your class on how to avoid plagiarism.
  • Customized resources for your specific class needs, such as videos and handouts.
  • Help determining whether a specific student paper was plagiarized.

Library Databases

Plagiarism is not just content from Internet sites; it is just as easy to plagiarize using the millions of articles available through the databases licensed by NU Library. Here are some ways to detect plagiarism:

  • Check the Works Cited/References provided by the student and review the articles used. See our directions on how to find the full-text of an article.
  • Look for a unique four or five word exact phrase as it appears in the paper. Type the phrase, surrounded by quotation marks, in the search box for an individual database (based on the topic of the paper), or in the OneSearch box on the library homepage.

Writing Center

If students have questions about how to paraphrase, need help writing a citation, or aren't certain if they are doing something that counts as plagiarism, the Writing Center can always help.

There are 2 locations:

  • Office of Academic Support, on the first floor of Seton Hall.
  • the study room on the main floor of the library

Students can make an appointment by going to the online sign-up page under the “Resources” tab in myNU

Plagiarism Tutorial

The NU Librarians have created an Interactive Plagiarism Tutorial that you can recommend, or require, that your students take. Your student's name and quiz results will be emailed to the library automatically upon completion.

After completing this module, students should be able to:

  • Define and identify plagiarism in its various forms.
  • Describe why avoiding plagiarism is important.
  • Recognize and develop effective skills to avoid plagiarism.
